Kitchen Fire Ruled Accidental

A fire at the Cumberland Arms Apartments has been ruled accidental according to the Cumberland Fire Marshal. The fire broke out at about 9:17am on March 7th in the kitchen area of an apartment. The buildings fire alarm and suppression systems activated along with help from neighbors using a fire extinguisher to put some of the fire out. Firefighters extinguished the rest of the fire without issue. During the fire operations, firefighters rescued two occupants from the apartment that was on fire and extinguished the remaining fire within the apartment. Cumberland Police Officers assisted with the rescues and evacuated other residents from their apartments bringing everyone out the building with no additional injuries or medical problems. The two occupants were transported to the hospital by Cumberland Fire Department and Cresaptown VFD Ambulances for smoke inhalation. Cumberland Fire Department along with Cumberland Police Department and Cresaptown VFD ambulance crew handled the incident. Bowling Green VFD and Bedford Road VFD stood by during the incident along Corriganville VFD and Allegany County EMS ambulances. American Red Cross assisted the occupants of the apartment that had the fire. The fire started in the kitchen on top of the stove. The cause of the fire is combustibles too close to a heat source. The fire was contained to the kitchen area of the apartment. Damages are estimated to be about $70,000 to the structure and $30,000 to the contents. Fire operations were under the direction of Captain Vince Pyle. Investigation was conducted by Shannon Adams, Fire Marshal for the Cumberland Fire Department with assistance from State Fire Marshal’s Office, Deputy Robert Reed.
