GCPS Superintendent Contract Extended

According to a press release from the Garrett County Board of Education at its most recent Board of Education meeting, the board voted to extend Superintendent Barbara Baker’s contract for another four-year term. Ms. Baker has been employed by Garrett County Public Schools for thirty-one years as a teacher, principal, and director. She was appointed as Superintendent in 2016 and will begin her sixth year on July 1, 2021. Ms. Baker stated, “It is truly an honor to serve as Superintendent of this wonderful school district. I have enjoyed working with our employees, students, parents, and the community and will continue to build relationships with each of these stakeholder groups. We will need to work together to recover from the pandemic while also concentrating our efforts on moving the school system forward.” Due to the uncertainties with enrollment and possible loss of revenue, Ms. Baker accepted a contract that included no increases in salary or benefits. She stated, “I am grateful to the Board of Education for this opportunity and will continue to focus my efforts on doing what is best for kids.”
