Two people are arrested on active warrants and drug charges. According to the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Task Force on early Saturday morning July 17th two people were arrested during a traffic stop on Broadford Road by the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division Deputies. A vehicle that was operated by 40 year old Brenda Dawn Shiflett of Terra Alta, WV was stopped for a traffic violation on Broadford Road near Maryland Highway. Shiflett was arrested on the strength of two active bench warrants from Allegany County, MD for failing to appear in District Court. A Garrett County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit scanned the vehicle which resulted in a positive alert for controlled dangerous substances. A search of the vehicle by Narcotics Division Deputies and Garrett County Sheriff’s Deputies resulted in a quantity of fentanyl and drug paraphernalia being seized. In addition to the bench warrants, Shiflett was additionally charged with possession of fentanyl and possession of drug paraphernalia. 36 year old Derek Steffan of Oakland was a passenger in the vehicle and deputies confirmed that Steffan had an active bench warrant for failing to appear in Garrett County District Court. Both persons were transported to the Garrett County Detention Center. Steffan was held on $5,000 bond after appearing before a Garrett County Court Commissioner. Shiflett remained in the Garrett County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing in District Court.
