Plans for Cumberland Speedway On Hold

According to a press release from Cumberland Speedway officials plans for auto racing this year are cancelled. The press release states “Citing a number of hurdles that prevent a return to successful dirt racing to the Fairgo Half Mile, Cumberland Speedway Inc and Allegany County government have agreed to cancel their plans to work together in reviving racing events at the Allegany County Fairgrounds. In a joint announcement, parties to the Fall 2014 agreement to bring stock car racing back to the Fairgrounds said that a financially viable racing program could not be achieved with available resources, despite good faith investments and efforts from both sides of the agreement.  Issues leading to the decision to discontinue current racing plans at the historic venue – which has hosted both horse racing and auto racing over a long colorful history – included cost and timing of unanticipated repairs and upgrades to the facility, scheduling of racing dates and maintaining a staffing and management plan for race operations in the face of continuing potential delays.” Without new interest and participation from an established racing promoter within the region, Cumberland Speedway and Allegany County have agreed to abandon joint efforts to promote Fairgrounds races for the foreseeable future.
