Frostburg Police Investigate Fatal Crash Involving Pedestrian

Frostburg City Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian. According to FPD officials on Sunday, February 21, 2021, at 6:52 p.m. officers responded to West Main Street near Armstrong Avenue for a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. The officers learned that a motor vehicle had been travelling eastbound on W. Main Street near the intersection with Armstrong Avenue while a pedestrian had been in the eastbound lane of travel where the collision occurred. The operator of the vehicle, a 1997 Saturn sedan, was identified as 26 year old Nathaniel Lease of Hyndman, PA.  The pedestrian was identified as 77 year old Albert Lee Hillegass of Frostburg. Hillegass was transported to the UPMC Western Maryland hospital by ambulance, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. Preliminary investigation, including evidence at the scene and witness statements, indicated that Hillegass was attempting to cross the eastbound lane of travel on W. Main Street just east of the crest of the hill just as Lease was travelling over the crest of the hill. Lease attempted to stop but was unable to do so. Lease remained at the scene and called 911.  Nighttime driving conditions, the physically obscured view from the crest of the hill, and the pedestrian’s dark clothing are factors believed to have contributed to the crash.  The Frostburg Fire Department and the Allegany County Department of Emergency Services EMS crews responded to the scene. Frostburg City Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
