Aug 13 The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that Believe in Tomorrow will be hosting our next Business After Hours on Thursday, August 13 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at their 79 Telemark Court location on Wisp Mountain in McHenry. Enjoy delicious food and mingle with fellow Chamber members and Chamber staff at our monthly networking event. Don’t forget your business card to enter to win prizes. Due to limited parking at the Telemark Ct. location, A Touch of Class will transport guests from the ASCI parking lot (250 Adventure Sports Way, McHenry, MD) to the Believe in Tomorrow house on Telemark Ct. The two vehicles (a shuttle bus and a limousine) will start at 5:15 and run trips to and from the locations as needed until 7:45 pm. The shuttle services will run no later than 7:45 pm. The Believe in Tomorrow Children’s Foundation provides respite housing services to critically ill children and their families. Their mountainside respite on Wisp Mountain operates year-round, allowing families with critically ill children the opportunity to get away, relax and reconnect together in the midst of a child’s treatment and recovery. The cost to attend the Business After Hours is $6.00 for members paid in advance and $10 for non-members and members paying at the door. Aug 14 Local favorite Grand Ole’ Ditch will close out Frostburg State University’s Frostburg Grows Summer Concert Series from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, at the Frostburg Grows: Grow It Local greenhouse complex off New Georges Creek Road SW (Md. 36) in Frostburg, just south of the Interstate 68 interchange and the Park and Ride lot. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.The series ties American roots music with the roots that are sprouting at Frostburg Grows. “We’re celebrating local music and local food,” said Frostburg Grows project coordinator Corey Armstrong. The concert series finale features the Cumberland-based bluegrass band, whose name is a nod to the nickname for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, Grand Old Ditch. The family-friendly outdoor concert has a suggested donation of $10. All contributions, which are handled through the FSU Foundation, Inc., are tax-deductible. Some seating is provided, but concertgoers are encouraged to bring their favorite camp chairs or blankets. Frostburg Grows will lead tours of the complex before the concert and during intermission where the community can get an inside look at the growing techniques used in the high-tunnel greenhouses that provide food to FSU’s dining hall, area businesses and community organizations. The sustainable agriculture training center also provides education to local farmers on ways to extend their growing capabilities. Frostburg Grows won the 2014 Maryland Sustainable Growth Award and was a national finalist in the Second Nature Climate Leadership Awards. SHIFT, Frostburg’s farm-to-table restaurant, will also be on hand to sell light refreshments and appetizers. Aug 15 In coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Jennings Randolph Lake, theFriends ofJennings Randolph Lake will host their second annual 3-D Archery Tournament at the Archery Range in the Robert W. Craig Campground Sat., August 15th beginning at 9:30 a.m. This 3-D archery course, one of a kind for the area, features 15 life-size animal targets set in the woods to present a realistic hunting situation or in this case a competition. Jennings Randolph Lake was one of the recipients of the Handshake Partnership Program funding. The lake joined 13 local partners to work together to provide the opportunity to practice, teach, and develop archery skills. The registration will take place at the group pavilion located in the campground close to the archery range and basketball court. Entry fee will be $10.00 per person Rules will be reviewed prior to the start of the event. Food and refreshments will be available. Aug 15- South Cumberland Assembly of God 21 East Elder Street. Will be having a Backpack Give Away from 10AM-1PM or until all gone. Aug 16 Register now for the inaugural running of the Allegany County Animal Shelter Howard’s 25K Run! Come to the mountains of Western Maryland to experience a 15 mile race on one of Maryland’s greatest natural resources, the Great Allegany Passage. The course is a scenic 25K point-to-point journey from Frostburg to Cumberland along a rail trail. Cash prizes will be awarded to top male and female runners, as well as honors for masters and age group winners. The race is set for August 16th, 2015 for 8 a.m. Registration for the run is open through August 15 with both online options through raceit.com and mail-in applications available. Howard’s 25K Run is one of the newest additions to the Queen City Striders 2015 calendar and is co-directed by Ray Hunt, Sharon Ellsworth & Chad Merrill.
