Daily COVID-19 Update

This is a friendly reminder that Allegany County Public Schools will begin the transition back to school buildings for concurrent in-person/hybrid learning for students in Grades 2-5 and Grades 6, 9, and 12 tomorrow, Monday, March 8, 2021. Students will attend school on an A-B-A-B day schedule based on last name. All students will be virtual on Friday.

On days that students come to the school building, they should report to their bus stop at their normal pick-up times. Schools will open at their regularly scheduled times, and elementary schools will be dismissed daily at 1:30 p.m. and middle and high schools will dismiss between 12:15 and 12:30 p.m. daily.

The Allegany County Health Department reports that 10,923 Allegany County residents have received at least their first dose of vaccine against COVID-19 (15.5% of the population), with 7,674 of those individuals now fully vaccinated with their second dose (10.9% of the population). By comparison, the state reported that 15.8% of all Marylanders had received at least their first dose of vaccine, with 8.7% now fully vaccinated.

Earlier this week, the health department announced that it had transitioned to Phase 1C of the vaccination plan, which includes those age 65 and older. Individuals interested in receiving the vaccine should complete the Vaccine Interest Form at health.maryland.gov/allegany. You will be added to the list to be contacted when vaccine is available for you.

Allegany County COVID-19 Case Statistics as of March 2:

• New COVID Cases: 7 (cumulative total 6,416)

• Additional Deaths: 1 (cumulative total 200)

• Cases Per 100,000 Population: 3.25 (Maryland: 12.39)

• Positivity Rate: 1.74% (Maryland: 3.28%)

For the week of March 1-5, 2021, ACPS reports that one staff member within an Allegany County Public School building has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. This individual will complete the required isolation period before returning to the school building. It has been determined that there are no close contacts to this individual within the school and no need to quarantine students or staff as a result of this positive case. Parents and staff in the impacted school have been notified of a case in the building through the ACPS Blackboard notification system. There were no student cases of COVID-19 reported this week in an ACPS school building.

In addition, there were three staff members reported this week as quarantined due to close contact with a positive person or Covid-Like Illness (CLI). There were nine students reported this week as quarantined due to close contact with a positive person or Covid-Like Illness (CLI).

The Hampshire County Health Department received 1 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Case investigation and contact tracing are ongoing. Hampshire County’s current case count is 1,587 confirmed (PCR and Rapid test combined), 12 active, 28 deaths and 2 hospitalizations.

The Hardy County Health Department and Hardy County Office of Emergency Management has three additional confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Hardy County, making 27 active cases, with a total confirmed case count of 1,343. We have had 22 confirmed COVID-19 deaths. We currently have 23 patients in quarantine at home, following proper protocol to protect their neighbors and community. Four patients are currently hospitalized due to severe symptoms of COVID-19. Due to privacy, additional information regarding the persons, area of residence, and travel history will not be disclosed. The Hardy County Health Department has completed the necessary contact tracing to ensure the safety of close contacts and to prevent additional transmission. Hardy County now has 1,294 individuals recovered, included in the total confirmed case count of 1,343.

Free Community COVID-19 Testing will be available Monday and Tuesday from 10am to 6 pm at the Mineral County Health Department parking lot.
