The Maryland Department of Health (MDH) announced an update on the top 10 and bottom 10 skilled nursing facilities in the state ranked by percentage of staff with at least one dose of a vaccine against COVID-19 and highly contagious variants. MDH also announced an update on skilled nursing facilities that did not submit adequate staff COVID-19 vaccination data as required by the state.

Per new vaccination protocols that went into effect on September 1, 2021, all nursing home staff are now required to have their first or single dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Nursing homes that fail to comply with the new vaccination protocols or do not report their vaccination data will be subject to increased fines, civil penalties, and enforcement actions.

On May 4, 2021, the Maryland Department of Aging launched the Skilled Nursing Facilities Vaccination Dashboard, which weekly publishes data on residents and staff vaccinated against COVID-19 at each of the skilled nursing  facilities in the state.

“That 74 nursing facilities in Maryland have 91 percent or more of their staff with at least one dose of a life-saving COVID-19 vaccine is a reflection of our statewide commitment to protecting our most vulnerable residents,” said MDH Secretary Dennis R. Schrader. “Facilities that are not complying need to immediately take action to adhere to protocols put in place to keep our elderly safe.”

“We are at a stage in the COVID-19 pandemic that requires nursing facilities to remain extra vigilant on the vaccination and other health and safety fronts, including reporting data,” said Maryland Department of Aging Secretary Rona E. Kramer. “We will again impose civil money penalties on nursing homes that are not complying and providing the required data that has been crucial to guiding how the State and local entities respond to COVID-19 and protect our loved ones.”
