Two men are arrested following an armed robbery in Cumberland. According to C3I officials Monday morning, 02/25/2019, at 6:09 AM, the Cumberland Police responded to the Circle K convenience store on Oldtown Road for a reported armed robbery. When the first responding officers arrived they found the doors locked and the two employees inside.
Initial reports indicated that two black male suspects had entered the store at approximately 6:00 AM. One of the suspects approached an employee behind the counter and immediately punched them in the face. Both suspects then forced the two employees into the office area. They demanded the combination to the safe. It was provided, but the suspects were still unable to open the safe. During the encounter the suspects drug one of the employees by their hair, and tied both employees up. During the struggle, one of the employees suffered three stab wounds in the back upper torso area. The suspects then fled the business on foot.
The first suspect was wearing a greenish colored, hooded jacket, dark pants, and a mask to try to disguise his identity. The second suspect was wearing a dark colored jacket, dark pants, and a white mask to try to disguise his identity. A possible suspect vehicle was also identified. The Cumberland Police set up a perimeter and conducted a search of the area with the assistance of a Maryland State Police K-9 and the Maryland State Police helicopter. The suspects were not located at that time.
Both employees were transported to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.
The Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) responded to the scene to assist in the investigation. Numerous interviews and the review of surveillance video helped Investigators secure enough information to obtain a search warrant for a private residence on Glenmore Street. The search warrant led to the recovery of bloody clothing, and what Investigators believe to be the knife used by the suspects.
As a result, Investigators obtained arrest warrants for the two suspects, 47 year old Anthony Maurice Ross, Sr., of Cumberland, and 42 year old Theron Denard Mitchell, of Jonesboro, Georgia.
Investigators developed possible locations where the suspects may have fled after the incident. Periodic checks of those locations led to the discovery of the suspect vehicle, at approximately 1:30 PM, parked in front of a private residence in the 200 block of National Highway in LaVale. While conducting surveillance on the vehicle, Investigators observed Ross and Mitchell exit the residence and enter the vehicle. Investigators followed the vehicle into Cumberland where it was stopped at the intersection of Mechanic Street and Valley Street by uniformed CPD officers in marked patrol units. Ross and Mitchell were taken into custody at that time.
Both Ross and Mitchell are being charged with Attempted 1st Degree Murder, Armed Robbery, First Degree Assault, and other related charges. They were each taken before a District Court Commissioner for an initial appearance, and are both currently being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center, pending their next court appearances.
The investigation is continuing by the Cumberland Police and C3I.
