Oakland Man Pleads Guilty to Assault Charges

An Oakland man pleads guilty to assault charges. According to Garrett County State’s Attorney Lisa Thayer Welch, 26 year old of Oakland Cody Andrew Upole pled guilty in the Circuit Court to first degree assault. Related charges were dismissed upon his plea.  Judge Ray Strubin ordered a pre-sentence investigation be conducted prior to sentencing and ordered Upole to remain in the Garrett County Detention Center pending the sentencing hearing.

Criminal investigators with the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office charged Upole in July.  Deputies responded to a residence in the Gorman area after the homeowners called to report a naked woman was on their porch screaming for help. That woman reported she had been assaulted by Upole at his residence earlier in the evening and had fled in fear for her life.  A medical evaluation and photographs documented hernumerous injuries, caused by Upole striking her with various objects and stabbing her with a dull knife on her shoulders. Upole was located in the McHenry area the next day and arrested.

Sentencing will be scheduled once the pre-sentence report is filed with the Court.
