Daily COVID-19 Update

A walk-in COVID-19 vaccination clinic is planned Tuesday, May 25 at the Oldtown Volunteer Fire Company at 18712 Oldtown Road SE, Oldtown, MD. The single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine will be available. Also, individuals can receive their second dose of the Moderna COVID vaccine at the clinic. No appointment is needed, but those getting their second dose of Moderna are asked to bring their vaccination card with them to the clinic.

Other upcoming walk-in COVID vaccination clinics include the following:

• Flintstone Volunteer Fire Company: Thursday, May 27

• Lonaconing Good Will Fire Company Armory: Tuesday, June 1

• Mt. Savage Fire Company: Thursday, June 3

Like the Oldtown clinic, these other clinics will offer single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine as well as second doses of the Moderna COVID vaccine. Hours for all four clinics are 9 a.m. to noon.

Last week, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced that any Maryland resident age 18 or older who has received a COVID-19 vaccination in Maryland is eligible to win one of several cash prizes totaling $2 million. One $40,000 winner will be randomly selected each day from May 25 to July 3. Then, on July 4, a final prize of $400,000 will be awarded to one lucky vaccinated Marylander. All that is required to enter is to get a COVID-19 vaccination, and any Maryland adult who has already been vaccinated is automatically entered into the drawing.

In Allegany County, 24,544 residents have received their first dose of a two-dose vaccine against COVID-19 (34.9% of the population), with 21,142 of those individuals now fully vaccinated with their second dose (30.0% of the population). The number of residents who have received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine is 2,500 (3.6%).

By comparison, the state reported that 51.9% of all Marylanders had received their first dose of a two-dose vaccine, with 42.2% having had both doses and 3.7% vaccinated with the single-dose vaccine.

Allegany County COVID-19 Case Statistics as of May 23:

• New COVID Cases: 15 (cumulative total 6,978)

• Additional Deaths: 0 (cumulative total 208)

• Cases Per 100,000 Population: 7.3 (Maryland: 5.44)

• Positivity Rate: 3.02% (Maryland: 2.04%)

In order to continue to facilitate vaccination efforts in Allegany County and to better serve the community, UPMC Western Maryland is pleased to partner with the Allegany County Health Department to announce an upcoming Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination clinic to be held Thursday, May 27, from noon until 6 p.m. in the hospital auditorium.

All Individuals age 12 and older are eligible for the Pfizer vaccine, and this clinic will administer the first dose. Please note, individuals under the age of 18 must have a parent present to sign a consent form.

Individuals should enter the hospital through the entrance adjacent to the parking garage where they will be screened and then directed to registration where they will be required to show their driver’s license or another valid form of identification.

The Hardy County Health Department and Hardy County Office of Emergency Management has one additional confirmed case of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Hardy County, making 16 active cases, with a total confirmed case count of 1,616. We have had 23 confirmed COVID-19 deaths. We currently have 15 patients in quarantine at home, following proper protocol to protect their neighbors and community. One patient is currently hospitalized due to severe symptoms of COVID-19. Due to privacy, additional information regarding the persons, area of residence, and travel history will not be disclosed. The Hardy County Health Department has completed the necessary contact tracing to ensure the safety of close contacts and to prevent additional transmission. Hardy County now has 1,577 individuals recovered, included in the total confirmed case count of 1,616.
