COVID-19 Update

The Allegany County Health Department reports that 19,893 Allegany County residents have received their first dose of a two-dose vaccine against COVID-19 (28.3% of the population), with 12,232 of those individuals now fully vaccinated with their second dose (17.4 % of the population). Additionally, 1,057 Allegany County residents have received the single dose Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine (1.5%).

By comparison, the state reported that 33.2% of all Marylanders had received their first dose of a two-dose vaccine, with 18.9% having had both doses and an additional 2.1% vaccinated with the single dose vaccine.

Beginning April 12 all vaccine providers statewide will open eligibility for Marylanders age 16 and older. However, individuals ages 16 and 17 will only be able to utilize providers who offer the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine because it is the only one currently approved by the FDA for that age group.

Allegany County COVID-19 Case Statistics as of April 8:

COVID case rates in Allegany County are on the rise again as they are around the country. The current seven-day rolling average number of cases for the county – 11.36 per 100,000 population – is more than three times what it was just one month ago when the average was 3.45 per 100,000. Health officials are urging the public not to be lax in maintaining social distancing, wearing a mask, frequently washing/disinfecting hands and high-touch surfaces, and avoiding social gatherings. All Allegany residents are urged to get a COVID vaccination.

For the week of April 5-9, 2021, ACPS reports 5 cases of COVID-19 in staff members, and 14 cases of COVID-19 in students. These individuals will complete the required isolation period before returning to their school buildings. Close contacts at school were identified in three of the staff cases and in eight of the student cases. Those identified close contacts will complete a ten-day quarantine before returning to the school building. Parents were notified through the ACPS Blackboard notification system if there was a positive case in their child’s school building.

ACPS had 12 staff members who were reported as quarantined this week due to either a close contact with a positive person or Covid Like Illness (CLI). ACPS had 211 students who were reported as quarantined this week due to either a close contact with a positive person or Covid Like Illness (CLI).

ACPS had one classroom at Beall Elementary School that met the Maryland Department of Health definition of a classroom outbreak.

There were Four (4) New Positive cases reported in Grant County. These cases are household contacts of previous positive cases.

We were notified that the second UK Variant was identified during routine surveillance testing of positive COVID tests submitted from Grant County. There is evidence that this Variant may spread more easily than other strains.

The Hampshire County Health Department received 7 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Case investigation and contact tracing are ongoing. Hampshire County’s current case count is 1,706 confirmed (PCR and Rapid test combined), 27 active, 32 deaths and 1 hospitalization. **Free COVID-19 Testing** Thursday, April 15th: 10a-6p Hampshire County Fairgrounds, Augusta WV.

The Hardy County Health Department and Hardy County Office of Emergency Management has two additional confirmed case of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Hardy County, making 29 active cases, with a total confirmed case count of 1,475. We have had 22 confirmed COVID-19 deaths. We currently have 27 patients in quarantine at home, following proper protocol to protect their neighbors and community. Two patients are currently hospitalized due to severe symptoms of COVID-19. Due to privacy, additional information regarding the persons, area of residence, and travel history will not be disclosed. The Hardy County Health Department has completed the necessary contact tracing to ensure the safety of close contacts and to prevent additional transmission. Hardy County now has 1,424 individuals recovered, included in the total confirmed case count of 1,475.
