COVID-19 Daily Update

On Thursday afternoon, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced that any Maryland resident age 18 or older who has received a COVID-19 vaccination in Maryland is eligible to win one of several cash prizes totaling $2 million. One $40,000 winner will be randomly selected each day from May 25 to July 3. Then, on July 4, a final prize of $400,000 will be awarded to one lucky vaccinated Marylander. All that is required to enter is to get a COVID-19 vaccination, and any Maryland adult who has already been vaccinated is automatically entered into the drawing.

Four walk-in COVID vaccination clinics are scheduled at local fire departments:

· Oldtown Volunteer Fire Company: Tuesday, May 25

· Flintstone Volunteer Fire Company: Thursday, May 27

· Lonaconing Good Will Fire Company Armory: Tuesday, June 1

· Mt. Savage Fire Company: Thursday, June 3

At all four clinics, single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine will be provided. Also, individuals can receive their second dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

Hours for all of four clinics are 9 a.m. to noon. No appointment needed. Please bring your vaccination card if you are receiving a second dose of Moderna vaccine.

In Allegany County, 24,188 residents have received their first dose of a two-dose vaccine against COVID-19 (34.4% of the population), with 20,812 of those individuals now fully vaccinated with their second dose (29.6% of the population). The number of residents who have received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine is 2,474 (3.5%).

By comparison, the state reported that 51.2% of all Marylanders had received their first dose of a two-dose vaccine, with 41.2% having had both doses and 3.7% vaccinated with the single-dose vaccine.

Allegany County COVID-19 Case Statistics as of May 20:

From ACPS: WEEKLY COVID UPDATE: For the week of May 17 – 21, 2021, ACPS reports zero cases of COVID-19 in staff members, and 6 cases of COVID-19 in students who were within an Allegany County Public School. These individuals will complete the required isolation period before returning to their school buildings. Close contacts at school were identified in all six of the cases. Those identified close contacts will complete a ten-day quarantine before returning to the school building. Parents were notified through the ACPS Blackboard notification system if there was a positive case in their child’s school building or on their child’s bus. In addition there were two other positive student cases reported for students who were not within the school at the time of illness. These students will also complete a ten-day isolation period.

The Hampshire County Health Department was notified that the COVID-19 variant of concern P.1 (Brazil) has been detected in a COVID-19 specimen from a resident of Hampshire County through routine public health surveillance.

Current advice regarding this variant:

~We have no evidence that infections by this variant cause more severe disease.

~Wearing masks, staying at least 6 feet apart from others, avoiding crowds, ventilating indoor spaces, washing hands often, and

vaccination—are our best tools for preventing the spread of this variant.

~Preliminary evidence suggests that vaccines currently used in the US may be less effective against this variant, but will reduce the risk of severe illness.

The Hampshire County Health Department has received 8 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Case investigation and contact tracing are ongoing. Hampshire County’s current case count is 1934 confirmed, 48 active, 34 deaths and 1 hospitalization.

**Free COVID-19 Testing**

LOCATION: Hampshire County Health Department

Hampshire County is currently at Heightened Community Transmission (ORANGE). Please continue to follow COVID-19 precautions including mask usage, social distancing, and frequent hand washing.

On Friday the Hardy County Health Department and Hardy County Office of Emergency Management has six additional confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Hardy County, making 18 active cases, with a total confirmed case count of 1,615. We have had 23 confirmed COVID-19 deaths. We currently have 16 patients in quarantine at home, following proper protocol to protect their neighbors and community. Two patients are currently hospitalized due to severe symptoms of COVID-19. Due to privacy, additional information regarding the persons, area of residence, and travel history will not be disclosed. The Hardy County Health Department has completed the necessary contact tracing to ensure the safety of close contacts and to prevent additional transmission. Hardy County now has 1,574 individuals recovered, included in the total confirmed case count of 1,615.

Vaccination appointments are available for 12 years old and above! The Mineral County Health Department is hosting a COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic on Wednesday (5/26/21) by appointment only from 9am to 3pm.
