Pat's Pick #13
Aug 16, 2010 -- 6:36amHere's a fun tune for you, combining 80"s new wave music with a tribute to one of the greatest voices from the past 50 years. The band ABC charted five US Top 40 singles between 1981 and 1990. Fronting the band, who still performs today is singer Martin Frye, who, along with his bandmates, set to song this tribute to the one and only Smokey Robinson. ABC had three number one hits on the US Dance Charts: "The Look of Love" (18 December 1982), "Be Near Me" (28 September – 5 October 1985) and "When Smokey Sings" / "Chicago" (29 August – 5 September 1987).

Jul 31, 2010 -- 10:58amHere's the first single from singer/songwriter Harper Simon. If he has a familiar sound to you, you may be picking up on vocal stylings he has inherited from his father.....Paul Simon. Harper not only writes and records his own music, he is also a successful music producer. He made his public singing debut with his father in 1976 on Sesame Street, singing "Bingo" with his dad, and was often referenced in song by his father, on songs like "St. Judys Comet" and "Graceland" (although he recently acknowledged he never did really visit the Memphis/Elvis landmark).

Jul 26, 2010 -- 6:46amAccording to the website Wikipedia, "Every Night" is a song written by Paul McCartney while he was on holiday in Greece, and first released on his McCartney album on April 17, 1970. McCartney sings and plays acoustic guitar, bass and drums on the original recording. His wife Linda, is heard singing the "Woo Woos" during the refrain of the song, with Paul ad-libbing in the second and final chorus of the song. Linda was part of the band on this version of the song, pulled from the MTV Unplugged broadcast from 1990. Also seen in the band is Hamish Stuart on bass from The Average White Band, and Robbie McIntosh on guitar from The Pretenders.

Jul 17, 2010 -- 10:05amThis week's pick is from a singer who amazes audiences with both the purity of her voice, soulful style and humble on stage performances. You may remember Corinne Bailey Rae from her radio hit "Put Your Records On" from a few years ago. I've picked another song from her debut album for you this week titled "I'd Like To", a funky and catchy song with a nice video. This talented vocalist from Britain has released 2 albums, suffered tragedy in her off stage life, and continues to produce great music that defies catagorization...is it neo-soul? Is it Jazz? Is it pop?. Get the whole story on Corinne Bailey Rae by visiting her official website here. I also recommend you watch some of her live performances on You Tube or other video outlets on live....she is simply amazing!

Jul 12, 2010 -- 6:36amHere's a great song from singer/songwriter Ray LaMontagne.....you maynot be familiar with his name, but once you hear his raspy voice, you won't forget his music or style. According to various reports, LaMontagne decided to persue a career in music after hearing a Stephen Still song on the radio while working at his job at a shoe factory! This song has been used in tv commercials and has been a favorite of contestants on American Idol.

Jun 21, 2010 -- 7:00amTime to get some music for your soul, from soul and gospel legends The Staple Singers. This quartet of Pops Staples and 3 of his daughters, including the incomperable voice of Mavis Staples brought music with a message to the masses in a series of albums and radio hits including "Respect Yourself" and this weeks Pat's Pick..."I'll Take You There". Although no video seems to be readily available of this song, I do point you to see their moving performance with The Band on the Martin Scorssce documentary "The Last Waltz".
